Drivers are being warned about road closures and roadworks taking place across the North East this week.
This list covers areas including Newcastle, Northumberland, County Durham, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. According to traffic experts, some roads in the region will be fully closed, while others will have lane closures or temporary traffic measures. Diversion routes may also be in place in some areas.

Motorists are urged to take these closures into account and alter their travel arrangements if necessary. The following list is for the week from Monday, July 10, to Sunday, July 16.
Northumberland
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Stamfordham Road, Callerton, in both directions between Birney Hill and B6323 Ponteland Road. Until July 13.
Green Lane, Ashington, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Chillingham Crescent and A196 North Seaton Road. Until December.
Speed restriction of 40 mph due to roadworks on A19 at A189 (Moor Farm Roundabout), Cramlington. Expect delays. Until January 30, 2024.
Hencotes Westbound, Hexham, closed due to roadworks from B6306 Eastgate to Temperly Place. Until March 4, 2024.
Sunderland
North Avenue in both directions closed due to gas main work from Heworth Road to Eskdale Crescent in Great Usworth, Washington. Until July 11.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Hylton Road, Pallion, in both directions at Bancroft Terrace. Until 5pm on July 14.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A1052 Dairy Lane in both directions at B1284 Front Street, Houghton Le Spring. Until July 17.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Whitburn Road, Seaburn, Whitburn, at Lowry Road (Morrison's roundabout). Until July 31.
Burdon Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks between Woodham Drive (Ryhope , Sunderland) and Burdon Turn-off (Burdon, Sunderland). Construction of the new Ryhope to Doxford Link road. Until August 11.
South Avenue in both directions closed due to roadworks from Coverdale Avenue to Eskdale Crescent in Great Usworth, Washington. Until August 17.
Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Sheepfolds North to Wilson Street North. Until September.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A1018 in both directions from Lawrence Street to B1294 Borough Road. Until October 13.
Wear Street, Hendon, in both directions closed due to gas main work between A1018 Hendon Road and Malings Close. Until October 19.
Newcastle
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 West Road near Denhill Park, Benwell. Until July 24.
No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Akenside Terrace in both directions from A1058 Jesmond Road to Brandling Court. Until September.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 Mosley Street, Grainger Town, at Dean Street. Until September 29.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street, Shieldfield, between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street. Until December.
No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Jesmond Dene Road, Jesmond, at Grosvenor Road. Until May 2025.
North Tyneside
One lane closed due to roadworks on A189 at A1056 Killingworth Way, Camperdown. On the roundabout. Until July 14.
Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street, North Shields, near Clive Street. Until May 2024.
South Tyneside
Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Commercial Road, South Shields, in both directions at Cornwallis Square. Until July 17.
One lane closed and delays expected due to roadworks on A19 Southbound at Abingdon Way (Boldon Junction), Boldon Colliery. Until July 17.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Mowbray Road at Tadema Road, South Shields. Until July 27.
Gateshead
- Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Blackfell Way, Birtley, near Robsons Way. Until July 24.
Hawks Road in both directions closed due to roadworks between Oakwellgate and Mill Road. Until August 4.
- Birch Road, Blaydon-on-Tyne, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Hazel Road and Larch Road. Until September.
Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Expect delays. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.
County Durham
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A691 Consett Road, Lanchester, at A6076. Until July 11.
Lambton View, Rainton Gate, in both directions closed due to roadworks from A690 to Station Road. Until August 4.
Pittington Road, Pittington, in both directions closed due to roadworks between A690 and Moorsley Road. Until August 11.
Wallnook Lane, Langley Park, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until December 2024.
