Lisburn special school students brought joy by lockdown lifeline

Kids with special needs have had a lockdown lifeline hand-delivered by their teachers.

Two-hundred 'sensory fun packs' were dropped to Parkview School students last week, some of whom haven't had visitors for more than two months.

Saichon Scott and her family have been shielding for 10 weeks because of Covid-19.

The 18-year-old has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe learning disabilities.

Mum Vivien said seeing her teacher let Saichon know they still cared.

She added: "She was so happy and excited and bouncing up and down.

"It makes our lives so much easier when she is happy and content.

"We have had a lot of meltdowns and a lot of strops, a lot of that is due to her being frustrated and not being able to say 'what's going on here mum?'.

"It [the gift] made a lot of difference to us and Saichon."

Emma Turkington, a specialist Specialist Support Worker with the Children’s Disability Team in Lisburn, said the service has had to go from 'hands-on' to giving virtual support.

She said: "Understandably many families are currently feeling the pressures associated with being in lockdown, but for families who have a child or young person with a disability these pressures are often felt harder.

"Many of the children require constant supervision, strict routines, physical assistance and medical care and many are experiencing high levels of anxiety."

The packs were paid for by grants from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) and the Community Foundation.

LCCC Alderman Amanda Grehan said: "Each pack was tailored for the individual child to best meet their needs and I am sure this initiative will be a great help to the children and parents during this difficult time.

"The enthusiasm for this project from teachers and classroom assistants at Parkview was amazing and I thank everyone for their help."
