Thousands of Lisburn Castlereagh residents' wheelie bins have been replaced in a trial aimed at reducing waste.
Around 10,000 homes have been given new containers to better separate their rubbish for the pilot scheme.
It is hoped the system will help to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
The bins let residents recycle batteries, textiles and glass - all from their kerbside.
Wilfie Muldrew, Lisburn and Castlereagh Council's head of waste, said the containers combined had more capacity than the old wheelie bins.
The trial will include a "wheelie box" with a stack of three containers, a food bin and a bin for rubbish destined for landfill.
As well as cutting down on landfill costs, recyclable materials will also arrive at the depot in better nick, and will be more saleable for it.
Mr Muldrew said: "It keeps them separate and maintains their integrity, there’s no cross-contamination of liquids from a washed out bottle or a milk carton spilling over onto the paper and deteriorating the quality of it."
There's already a local market for high quality recyclables and an appetite for more.
Mr Muldrew said: "The paper, because it stays in the top box, is clean, it's as white and new as the day it was printed on and that can go back in to making food cartons locally.
"That's what they want: good quality product that can be used locally so it sustains jobs and it can help create more."
The council will collect data on the trial to show elected members, before a decision is made on whether to roll it out permanently.
