Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council latest NI council to implement menopause policy

Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) have launched a new policy to facilitate women going through the menopause.

The new policy aims to form an environment in which colleagues can "change attitudes" in the workplace and "create a better understanding through education".

The council announced the policy change on World Menopause Awareness Day (October 18).

All staff employed by the local authority will also now be able to uptake training and guidance on how we help those suffering from menopausal symptoms.

Vice Chair of Corporate Services, Alderman Michael Henderson said LCCC was committed to providing an "inclusive and supportive working environment for all employees".

He added: “It is important that across the whole council everyone is able to express any concerns they have when it comes to their health and wellbeing and that they feel supported in dealing with any challenges they may be facing.

“I hope that, through this policy, all staff will be more informed, more confident and better able to support each other when necessary.”

The news comes as the Equality Commission urged employers in Northern Ireland to do more for women experiencing symptoms.

It's been reported that up to 900,000 women in the UK have left jobs as a result of menopausal symptoms.

Derry City and Strabane District Council became the first council to implement a policy on menopause in January, while Belfast City Council is currently finalising a menopause policy through a women's steering group.

Caroline Magee, Head of Human Resources and Organisation Development, added: “We recognise that our employees are our biggest asset.

“[We] continue to work tirelessly to deliver essential services and support local people every day. We must do all we can to provide support to employees who may be facing challenges such as menopause. .

“We want women to be able to feel confident to discuss menopause and ask for support so that we can put in place adjustments to help them continue to be successful in their roles.

"We want to educate men and women about perimenopause and menopause which for many women can be a life changing and isolating experience.”
