Lisandro Martinez provides injury update ahead of Manchester United pre-season

Lisandro Martinez has provided an update on his recovery from injury with the Manchester United defender hopeful of returning for pre-season.

Martinez has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury in the 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw at home to Sevilla in February. It was soon confirmed a broken metatarsal would keep him out for the remainder of the season.

The Argentinian underwent surgery on the injury in the following days, with early summer set as a target for a return. Erik ten Hag said at the end of May that he hoped to have the Argentinian back at Carrington imminently and available for the start of pre-season.

With the majority of United's players away on international duty or enjoying their holidays after FA Cup final defeat, Martinez looks to be stepping up his rehabilitation. And the 25-year-old has posted an update on his progress.

Alongside a picture of himself in a gym, the defender wrote: "Getting closer".

Martinez looks on track to meet his return-to-play target of pre-season, with just over three weeks until their first friendly. The Reds will take on Leeds United at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo on July 12 before meeting Lyon in Edinburgh a week later.

The centre-back had been an ever-present in the United team during his debut season, playing 45 times across all competitions following his arrival from Ajax last summer.

In the days following his surgery back in April, Martinez took to Instagram, writing: "Everything went really well, thanks to God! Many thanks for all of your messages. Now focusing on the recovery."
