Lisandro Martinez hits out at boos for Emi Martinez as World Cup final fallout rumbles on

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez hit out at the audience inside the Ballon d’Or ceremony after they booed Emi Martinez.

The stopper won the annual Lev Yashin Trophy awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year, with Martinez recognised for his performances for Argentina at the World Cup.

Martinez pulled off a stunning save to deny Randal Kolo Muani in the dying embers of a dramatic World Cup final against France, ensuring the game went to penalties.

The former Arsenal stopper had also saved two penalties in the quarter-final shootout win over the Netherlands in a stunning campaign in Qatar.

He was, however, criticised for some of his celebrations. Jubilant scenes inside the Argentine dressing room after winning the final showed Martinez mocking Kylian Mbappe, while he also held the Golden Glove trophy to his groin.

As a result, the 31-year-old was booed in Paris when collecting his award on Monday night but international teammate Martinez believes he should have been afforded more respect.

“Without a doubt it should have been respected: whoever the player is,” he told TYC Sports.

“I am one of those that I respect, and the truth is that I loved the attitude of Dibu, always leading by example. It makes me happy because of Dibu’s example more than that of other people.”
