Lisa Snowdon: ‘Being in nature helped me get through lockdown anxiety’

Lisa Snowdon said the past 14 months had been “scary” - and being in the great outdoors had helped her cope

Lisa Snowdon has said being able to get out into nature has been “game changing” for her in dealing with pandemic stress and anxiety.

The broadcaster and model, 49, who lives near Epping Forest in east London, said the great outdoors helped her feel “grounded” during the “scary” past 14 months.

She said: “After the year we have had and it has been really challenging, it has been really helpful just being out in your own garden or a public space, I have found.

“The impact of the last year, all of us being locked down for the first time ever and not able to do what we want to do, it was very scary and massively challenging.

“So for me, being able to take that walk for an hour when we were allowed out and about to appreciate the weather and the blossoms and the plants and be in nature or be away from your phone - that has had a huge positive impact to me.”

She continued: “It has always grounded me and has centred me [being in nature].

“But it was massively highlighted last year. It has been a game changer. In the midst of being anxious and stressed and dealing with grief, being around nature has been so positive for me.”

Snowdon is an ambassador for Garden Day, which takes place this Sunday.

The day was created as a celebration of gardens and outdoor spaces and the joy they bring - particularly in the past year.

“Being around nature is massively important for our wellbeing,” she said.

“It is an all-round positive thing to have in your life. That’s why I really love Garden Day and hope people will gather in their gardens - socially distanced and in small groups of course - to celebrate the great outdoors.”
