Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley dies of cardiac arrest; why it’s important to know how to perform a CPR

The only child of rock'n'roll legend Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley has died of cardiac arrest, media reports have said. The 54 year old was rushed to hospital earlier on Thursday.

"It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us," Priscilla Presley, her mother, said.

The 1968 born had a successful career in music like her father. She was married to pop legend Michael Jackson, actor Nicholas Cage and musicians Danny Keough and Michael Lockwood.

US media outlet TMZ reported that she was found unresponsive at her home in California. Her former husband Danny Keough had performed CPS. The outlet also said that she was administered epinephrine, which is commonly referred to as adrenaline, to regain the pulse; however she had suffered cardiac arrest before that. Shortly after this paramedics arrived and she was taken to hospital.

Cardiac arrest explained

Cardiac arrest is the loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness. In this case the heart stops beating all of a sudden. In order to revive the person quick medical intervention is absolutely necessary.

Data says that nine of ten people who have cardiac arrest outside hospital die within minutes.

The common signs of cardiac arrest are chest discomfort, shortness of breath, weakness, fast beating of heart, fluttering of heart beat. Dizziness, fatigue and racing heart happen immediately before a cardiac arrest.

Majority of cardiac arrests happen to those who are not even aware of having a heart problem. It is a common cause of death in those who have coronary heart disease, stroke and other heart defects and accounts for more than half of such deaths.

CPR during cardiac arrest: Know how to do it

CPR is extremely crucial during cardiac arrest. It is because during cardiac arrest the heart is unable to pump blood and death can happen within minutes without treatment. In this situation, using CPR mimics heart beats. Chest compressions enable the heart to pump.

The American Red Cross lists the following steps for CPR:

Check the scene for safety and put on any protective equipment, such as a mask.Check for breathing, bleeding and other life-threatening conditions by shouting, tapping their shoulderIf the person isn't responding or isn't breathing and only gasping, call emergencyPlace the person on the back on a firm, even and flat surface.Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 a minute.Give two breaths.Repeat the cycle of 30 compressions and two breaths.

The US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes the following triggers for cardiac arrest: heavy alcohol use, binge drinking, physical stress, use of cocaine, amphetamines, or marijuana, drinking too much coffee, severe emotional stress, and flu.
