In 2011, Major Steve McCulley was commanding 175 men in Afghanistan when he was struck by an IED. Serious injuries meant he spent three weeks in a coma and then three years at the rehabilitation centre at Headley. Steve knew his injuries meant the end of his life as a soldier – and also of his passion for cycling. So he decided to do the next best thing and put his energy into the bike business.
Last month saw the launch of his revolutionary folding bicycle – the LIOS Nano. Steve wanted his bike to be: ‘Clean, quiet, light, strong, fast and pretty.’ To that end it has a carbon frame and forks, carbon wheels and a carbon belt drive (so there’s no oil on the bike). Hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano gears mean the Nano rides as well as it looks. It’s a fast bike, that also happens to fold (liosfoldingbike.com).
