Lions will bring in kicking competition for Ryan Santoso following Week 10 debacle

Ryan Santoso’s run as the placekicker for the Detroit Lions is on thinner ice than is forming on the fringes of Lake St. Clair. After missing an extra point and a potential game-winning field goal in the Week 10 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s not an unexpected development.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the status of the kicker situation during his press conference on Monday.

We’re going to bring some guys in, work them out, just see who the best man for the job is,” Campbell said.

He was then asked if the weather or unacceptable (by NFL standards) field conditions in Heinz Field were culpable in Santoso’s terrible miss. His 47-yard field goal attempt in overtime was several yards short and wide right.

“No, the procedure was good. The snap and hold was good on both,” Campbell stated. “Nope. They did a good job with the procedure.”

Santoso was elevated from the practice squad late in the week after Austin Seibert went on injured reserve with an ankle injury suffered in practice. If (when) Santoso gets replaced, the new kicker will be the third the Lions have used in the regular season and the fifth since Matt Prater departed in free agency.
