Lions waive-injured LB Tre Lamar, re-sign WR Deontez Alexander

The Detroit Lions have announced that they have waived-injured linebacker Tre Lamar and re-sign wide receiver Deontez Alexander.

Lamar left Clemson after his NCAA national championship-winning junior year with NFL aspirations and signed with the Lions after going undrafted. He fits the size profile and skill set of what the Lions look for in an off-the-ball linebacker and his time with the Lions may not be over despite today’s transaction.

Because Lamar is waived with an injury designation, if he clears waivers, he will then he will revert back to the Lions roster. They will then have to decide if they want to waive him again with an injury settlement or they can place him on injured reserve, paying him his entire salary — around a half-million dollars — and retaining his rights moving forward. This is the same approach they took last season with linebacker Garret Dooley, allowing him a year to rehab with the team, as well as, being able to learn the Lions’ complex defensive system.

Alexander returns to the Lions once again after being waived last week to make room for Tarvarus McFadden. With veteran wide receiver Jermaine Kearse being placed on injured reserve after breaking his leg in Week 1 of the preseason, Alexander provides more depth at the outside receiver position. He still has a difficult path to the 53-man roster.
