The jubilant Springboks have added a British and Irish Lions series win to their 2019 World Cup triumph after edging Saturday’s huge, winner-takes-all Third Test in Cape Town.
12 years on from his memorable heroics in 2009, veteran fly-half Morne Steyn - now 37 and winning his first Test cap since 2016 - was again the hero for South Africa as he nailed a last-gasp penalty to seal a dramatic 19-16 victory in eerily familiar scenes.
It was another impressive second-half display from the Boks, who had trailed 6-10 at the interval courtesy of Wales hooker Ken Owens’ try from a driving maul.
However, there were several missed opportunities from the much-improved Lions - who lost fly-half Dan Biggar to a serious-looking knee injury early on - in that opening 40 minutes, the most glaring of which was Liam Williams’ failure to pick out compatriot Josh Adams for what would have been a certain second score in the right corner.
The Lions’ wait for another series win in South Africa will now extend to at least 36 years as they are left to reflect on what might have been.
