Lions vs AUNZ Invitational XV LIVE: Result and latest updates after eight-try rout in Adelaide

Lions vs AUNZ Invitational XV LIVE!

The British and Irish Lions are celebrating their best performance of the summer so far in Adelaide. Andy Farrell’s side thrashed an Australia-New Zealand Invitational team 48-0 on Saturday in their final warm-up fixture ahead of the First Test against Australia in Brisbane next weekend.

The Lions ran in eight tries for the third time on this tour, with Duhan van der Merwe grabbing a hat-trick to go along with scores from Ben White, Sione Tuipulotu, Scott Cummings, Ronan Kelleher and Henry Pollock, leaving Andy Farrell with some huge selection calls to make ahead of their opening meeting with the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium.

Owen Farrell made his return for the Lions, but Luke Cowan-Dickie was stretchered off with a neck brace in the first half to add to their injury woes with Garry Ringrose now ruled out of the First Test with concussion and Blair Kinghorn facing a race against time to be fit due to a knee problem. Jamie George has already been called up, with more potential back cover needed with Ireland’s Jamie Osborne already due to arrive in a training capacity.

Full-time

The Lions officially have lift-off in Australia!

A fifth consecutive win Down Under but by far their best performance of the summer so far against what was expected to be arguably their toughest opposition to date.

Ruthless in attack and ferocious in defence, not conceding a single point while running in eight tries for the third time on this trip.

Now they have a clear midweek ahead of the First Test against the Wallabies back at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium next weekend.

Andy Farrell has some serious thinking to do in terms of selection with some of those excellent individual performances today.

Ben Earl rightly gets man of the match. He was awesome.

79 mins: From bad to worse late on for the hosts as prop Fusitua receives their second yellow card of the night for a dangerous clear out on Morgan.

They will finish this match with 14 men and the Lions have a good chance now for last-gasp try No9.

That will be reviewed in the bunker, too.

Alex Mitchell is at scrum-half now for the Lions.

TRY! Lions 48-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Henry Pollock 75'

12:47 , George Flood

75 mins: Yes, he has!

After a testing kick through from Farrell, a panicked pass back to McLaughlin-Phillips is spilled and Pollock just touches the loose ball down before the latter.

He checks his pulse in celebration.

Marcus Smith adds the conversion.

74 mins: The ruthless Lions want more late tries here, with the lively Hansen leading the charge.

Has Pollock scored now too?

Lions 41-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

71 mins: A try-saving tackle from White on Stevenson keeps the hosts at zero points with less than 10 minutes to play at the Adelaide Oval.

Are the Lions about to pitch an unlikely shutout?

TRY! Lions 41-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Ronan Kelleher 70'

12:40 , George Flood

70 mins: Try No7!

Kelleher goes short from the lineout to Schoeman and then quickly gets the ball back before driving through three defenders to touch down.

Another missed conversion from Marcus Smith.

Lions 36-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:38 , George Flood

68 mins: The penalties are piling up for this stretched AUNZ Invitational XV defence and it’s a yellow for Frizell for collapsing the maul.

Relentless Lions pressure in what has been their best performance of the tour so far by a long way.

12:30 , George Flood

62 mins: A quick impact from the lock and yet another Scottish try!

59 mins: Another change in the Lions pack as captain for the night Beirne is replaced by Scott Cummings.

Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:28 , George Flood

59 mins: The Lions have had serious problems at the breakdown on this tour so far, particularly against Charlie Gamble and the Waratahs and then in the win over the Brumbies in midweek.

Frizell, Samu and Sotutu were expected to offer another stern test in that area today, but the Lions are bossing it at the moment and earning penalties for that hard work.

Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:26 , George Flood

57 mins: A rare penalty shipped at the scrum by replacement Lions tighthead Finlay Bealham, who has enjoyed a solid tour so far and replaced Stuart a few minutes ago.

McLaughlin-Phillips, Campbell, Thomas, Fusitua and Philip have all been sent on by Les Kiss.

Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:23 , George Flood

54 mins: The ever-eager Pollock feeds White, who looks to speed away down the Lions’ left flank.

So, Marcus Smith to 10, Farrell to 12 and Tuipulotu shifting to 13?

Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:17 , George Flood

48 mins: Here he comes!

Owen Farrell is on early in the second half for his first appearance of this tour.

It’s Jones that’s gone off - being saved for a potential starting berth in Brisbane, perhaps?

Particularly when you consider the reports this morning that Garry Ringrose will miss the First Test with a concussion.

Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:15 , George Flood

46 mins: A couple of cheap penalties conceded by the Lions have the AUNZ Invitational XV sustaining some momentum.

They are starting to ask more questions in the 22 with ball in hand now, though their momentum is halted by a frustrating crossing penalty.

TRY! Lions 24-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Sione Tuipulotu 43'

12:11 , George Flood

43 mins: There’s the fourth try!

A lovely little move and bit of deception as White taps and feeds Earl, who finds Tuipulotu.

The Scotland captain shifts to his left wonderfully and touches down underneath the posts.

The easiest of conversions is slotted by Fin Smith.

Four Scottish tries and counting in Adelaide - on the same day that Gregor Townsend’s heavily weakened side were beaten by Fiji.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:09 , George Flood

42 mins: Very loose in possession from the AUNZ Invitational XV and now the Lions have great attacking position after Hansen scrambles to get hold of the ball.

They are passing the ball well and at pace again in search of another opening, coming back for a penalty for offside.

They are going to go for the tap from close range...

Edmed kicks to get us back underway in Adelaide.

Can the Lions build on that impressive first half?

Earl with a powerful burst straightaway, but he just loses the ball at the end of it.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

12:04 , George Flood

Hopefully that Cowan-Dickie injury was not as serious as it looked and the stretcher and neck brace were precautionary measures.

You would obviously imagine that his First Test place is now in jeopardy.

That will surely mean that Ronan Kelleher is the chief back-up for starting hooker and Ireland team-mate Dan Sheehan in Brisbane next weekend.

11:53 , George Flood

Half-time

A thoroughly pleasing first half for the Lions in Adelaide, with three quick-fire tries - two from Duhan van der Merwe and one for Scotland team-mate Ben White.

They have been far more menacing in attack and ferocious defensively, holding a talented AUNZ Invitational XV scoreless through that opening 40 minutes.

The injury to Luke Cowan-Dickie the only concern a week out from the First Test.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:51 , George Flood

41 mins: Finally a burst of tempo from the AUNZ Invitational XV as they attack down the left with the clock in the red through Salakaia-Loto and Frizell.

However, the latter’s pass inside intended for Samu is deflected backwards by Fin Smith and the Lions regain possession before quickly going into touch to invite the half-time whistle.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:48 , George Flood

38 mins: The turnovers forced are piling up for the Lions, the latest from captain Beirne to likely extinguish the hosts’ hopes of hitting back before the interval.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:45 , George Flood

36 mins: Applause all around the ground for Cowan-Dickie, who has been strapped to a stretcher on the medical cart with his neck in a brace.

Best wishes to him. Kelleher replaces him at hooker.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:43 , George Flood

36 mins: A long break in play and the clock has been stopped as Cowan-Dickie continues to receive attention.

The stretcher has been brought onto the pitch.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:41 , George Flood

36 mins: Cowan-Dickie is down for the Lions after he tries to tackle Salakaia-Loto and receives a heavy impact to the head.

That did not look good. Ronan Kelleher will be coming on at hooker.

Hopefully he’s okay.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:38 , George Flood

34 mins: The AUNZ Invitational XV are struggling to maintain any sort of momentum here as they look to expose Van der Merwe’s frailties with balls aimed in behind.

We’ve seen that already a few times on this tour.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:37 , George Flood

32 mins: This time an error on the pass from Fin Smith to Tuipulotu halts the Lions in their tracks.

The AUNZ Invitational XV will try to gain some territory off the back of this latest scrum.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:35 , George Flood

30 mins: The Lions are almost in for try No4 of this first half after a superb break from Jones, who accelerates through a gap before eventually being cut down.

The Lions clear out and get quick ball, Hansen sprinting through and trying to put in Cowan-Dickie in the corner - but the England hooker can’t take in the pass and a golden chance is lost.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:34 , George Flood

28 mins: The Lions’ scrum has been excellent on this tour and is standing up to scrutiny again at the moment.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:31 , George Flood

25 mins: More intent with ball in hand from the AUNZ XV, Edmed again trying to inject some tempo after a bizarre hacked kick into touch from Beirne of all people.

However, his pass is too hot to handle for wing Lam, who spills forward.

Farrell will be pleased with this Lions defence so far, as well as their early ruthlessness in attack.

Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:28 , George Flood

23 mins: A cheap lineout penalty puts the Lions under the cosh.

They quickly ship another in the 22 and the AUSNZ side go for a quick tap as they look to impose their formidable ball carriers close to the line.

Frizell tries to power his way through but he’s stopped by Schoeman and Jones.

TMO has found a knock-on earlier in the sequence.

Scrum red.

TRY! Lions 17-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Duhan van der Merwe 21'

11:24 , George Flood

21 mins: This is sparkling stuff from the Lions so far after a couple of low-key performances - the hosts just can’t live with their pace and intensity.

They work the ball through the hands so well again and Hansen picks out Van der Merwe in acres of space to dot down his second try already with Laumape nowhere near.

Another frustrating miss from the tee from Fin Smith.

Lions 12-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:22 , George Flood

18 mins: The relentless Lions are attacking with such purpose in this first quarter, Pollock eventually held up after bulldozing over the line in the left corner.

There was a penalty advantage and they are going to go for the tap with this AUNZ Invitational XV defence already creaking badly.

They are quickly camped just outside the try line once more...

Lions 12-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:20 , George Flood

15 mins: Such a high tempo to this game early on as Jones puts boot to ball through the middle and Fin Smith gives determined chase.

Stevenson collects deep in the 22 and manages to find Edmed, who scrambles into touch before being hit hard.

Lions 12-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:17 , George Flood

13 mins: The Lions are soaking up some pressure now after that early double strike with Van der Merwe very lucky after nearly gifting a golden chance.

Edmed is the architect of these attacks at the moment as the AUNZ Invitational XV finally wake up.

Good defensive work from Hansen to mop up in the 22 and clear.

TRY! Lions 12-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Ben White 10'

11:13 , George Flood

10 mins: Emphatic from the Lions early on here!

Really sharp stuff from White on his first Lions start as he picks and goes from a ruck after a great Cowan-Dickie clearout, speeding through the space to score.

Fin Smith this time slots an easy conversion in front of the posts.

TRY! Lions 5-0 AUNZ Invitational XV | Duhan van der Merwe 7'

11:10 , George Flood

7 mins: The Lions lead early in Adelaide after a far better start.

Superb from Keenan down the left flank, keeping the ball in play from a poor kick and combining to release Van der Merwe, who saunters through for the opening try.

Fin Smith misses the conversion.

Lions 0-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:07 , George Flood

5 mins: Some more solid carrying from the Lions, with Edmed then calling for the mark in the 22 after a testing kick.

His resulting boot sees the ball drilled into touch impressively around halfway.

Lions 0-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:06 , George Flood

4 mins: This has been a brighter start from the Lions, as Andy Farrell would have been demanding after another sloppy opening against the Brumbies.

Tuipulotu is looking to drive the initiative.

Lions 0-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:05 , George Flood

3 mins: A couple of early scrums in Adelaide, the Lions attacking well off the first after the penalty.

Hansen finds Van der Merwe with a fine pass, but the Scotland wing spills the ball in the tackle.

Another scrum and the AUSNZ XV can safely exit.

Lions 0-0 AUNZ Invitational XV

11:04 , George Flood

2 mins: Many people believe that Jac Morgan - the lone Welshman in the Lions group after Tomos Williams’ tour-ending hamstring injury - should be the starting openside flanker in the Tests.

He’s just smashed into an early tackle and forced the knock-on in an intense start.

Les Kiss hails 'once in a lifetime opportunity' for AUNZ side

10:38 , George Flood

Les Kiss calls today a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for his AUNZ Invitational XV squad in Adelaide.

A reminder that a combined team from Australia and New Zealand has not been assembled since 1989, when they lost 19-15 to the Lions in Brisbane.

That squad eventually only included three New Zealanders in Kieran Crowley, Steve McDowall and Frano Botica after most of them dropped out.

Now the team is packed full of players with All Blacks experience.

AUNZ Invitational XV stacked with internationals

There are six players with international experience for Australia in the starting AUNZ Invitational XV, a list comprised of Marika Koroibete, Tane Edmed, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Blyth, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Pete Samu.

Eight have played for the All Blacks in Shaun Stevenson, Ngani Laumape, David Havili, Folau Fakatava, Aidan Ross, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Shannon Frizell and Hoskins Sotutu.

Blues wing AJ Lam - who has played for a New Zealand XV - is the only starter without a senior Test cap to his name.

Jamie Osborne earns Lions call-up as training cover

09:59 , George Flood

The Lions said on Thursday that Blair Kinghorn’s return to training would be managed by the medical team in the coming days.

In the meantime, Andy Farrell has called up Jamie Osborne as training cover.

The versatile Leinster back has left Ireland’s camp ahead of their match in Portugal tonight and is expected to arrive in Brisbane on Saturday.

He played the full 80 minutes for a new-look Irish team in their 34-5 victory over Georgia in Tbilisi last weekend.

Blair Kinghorn in fitness race for Test opener

09:51 , George Flood

Blair Kinghorn looks to be in a race against time to be fit for the First Test next weekend.

Having already lost both Tomos Williams and Elliot Daly to tour-ending injuries, plus Zander Fagerson before the trip, the Lions have now been sweating over Kinghorn after he limped off with a knee injury in the first half against the Brumbies in midweek.

While scan results were said to be positive, it remains to be seen if the Scotland and Toulouse star - the presumed Test starter at full-back - will be ready in time for Brisbane.

If not, then it will surely be Hugo Keenan who takes the No15 jersey against the Wallabies, barring disaster today, backed up by the versatile Marcus Smith.

"Blair didn't look great against the Brumbies and it was the right thing to do to pull him off,” Lions defence coach Simon Easterby said on Friday.

“But the scan has showed up way more positive than we'd hoped originally.

"We're hopeful that he'll take some part in training next week and then it will be a little bit of a waiting game in terms of whether he's available for the first Test.

"It will be one of those things that we'll just have to take day by day. Like a lot of these injuries throughout a tour, we'll give guys an opportunity to try and prove their fitness.

"And who knows? If it works out, great. If not, we've got good guys who are able to step up."

Tane Edmed out to send Wallabies message

09:38 , George Flood

The hosts are co-captained by the Crusaders’ Super Rugby-winning centre David Havili and Reds lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, with Les Kiss’ coaching team featuring the likes of ex-New Zealand boss Ian Foster and Simon Cron of the Western Force.

A number of this squad - plus Kiss and Cron - have already met the Lions on this tour for their Super Rugby franchises, including Aidan Ross, Tane Edmed, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Jock Campbell and more.

Edmed will want to prove today that he is still worthy of consideration for the Test series, having been left out of the revised 36-man Australia squad named by head coach Joe Schmidt on Friday despite the injury to first-choice fly-half Noah Lolesio.

Instead there was a sensational return to the Wallabies fold for the first time in three years for veteran James O’Connor, starter of all three Tests against the Lions in 2013, who joined Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh.

The likes of key trio Jake Gordon, Will Skelton and Rob Valetini were also included after missing the lacklustre warm-up win over Fiji in Newcastle last weekend through injury.

Les Kiss picks strong AUNZ Invitational squad

09:25 , George Flood

The potential strength of today’s opponents had been subject to question, with the Lions having not faced a combined team from Australia and New Zealand since their 1989 tour Down Under, when they won 19-15 in Brisbane.

Most All Blacks players dropped out before that game so it was mostly an Australian team featuring the likes of Michael Lynagh and David Campese.

This time around, a strong squad named by Queensland Reds - and future Wallabies - head coach Les Kiss features no fewer than 17 internationals.

The most eye-catching selections include 59-cap Australia wing Marika Koroibete and the imposing back-row trio of Shannon Frizell, Pete Samu and Hoskins Sotutu.

(Getty Images)

New role for Henry Pollock

09:13 , George Flood

As expected, most of the Lions’ presumed Brisbane starters have been given the night off in Adelaide after Andy Farrell named what many anticipate to be very close to his First Test squad for Wednesday’s somewhat unconvincing 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies in Canberra.

He’s mostly reverted back to the team that laboured to a scrappy 21-20 victory against the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney last weekend, with Ireland’s Tadhg Beirne handed the captaincy again with tour skipper Maro Itoje rested.

Hugo Keenan will want to impress at full-back amid Blair Kinghorn’s injury, while there’s a first start at scrum-half for Ben White as Scotland team-mates Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu renew their almost telepathic centre partnership that many feel should be unleashed against the Wallabies.

There’s a chance to make his mark at tighthead for Will Stuart and Jac Morgan and Ben Earl return to the back row alongside Henry Pollock, who lines up at blindside flanker for the first time in his burgeoning career.

The budding England star was supposed to take the No6 shirt last week, but was a late scratch from the Waratahs game with a calf issue, leading to a last-minute reshuffle from Andy Farrell.

Owen Farrell set for tour debut in Adelaide

09:03 , George Flood

So the headline team news for the Lions this morning is undoubtedly the expected inclusion of Owen Farrell, who has been named on the bench in Adelaide.

It will be a remarkable 19th appearance in the famous red shirt on, following his late call-up last week to replace the injured Elliot Daly, what is a fourth tour matched only by greats Brian O’Driscoll, Alun Wyn Jones, Willie John McBride and Mike Gibson.

It will also be Farrell’s first appearance in any game since he suffered a concussion playing for Racing 92 against Lyon in the Challenge Cup semi-finals on May 4.

His disappointing lone season in France was also hampered by a lingering groin injury that required surgery in November, while Farrell has not played Test rugby since stepping down from England duty in the aftermath of the 2023 World Cup in order to prioritise his and his family’s mental wellbeing.

Those injuries and lack of form have led to huge debate over Farrell’s inclusion - can he prove to his dad today that he’s worthy of a spot in the Test squad?

Lions vs AUNZ Invitational XV prediction

08:49 , George Flood

Time is very nearly up for those Lions hopefuls currently on the outside looking in when it comes to potential Test selection - it’s now or never in terms of their chances of featuring in Brisbane next weekend.

That should sharpen minds for what is expected to be another stiff Test against strong opposition, albeit one that may struggle with some of the same issues as the Lions have faced in terms of cohesion with a number of players not used to featuring together.

Andy Farrell will be eager to see his team come out of the blocks fast with slow starts having become a frustrating theme of the tour so far, while he will also be demanding improvements in terms of taking their opportunities, minimising the error and penalty counts and competing better at the breakdown - though the imposing trio of Shannon Frizell, Pete Samu and Hoskins Sotutu are sure to have something to say about that.

Lions to win, by 10 points.
