Lions tried out former Panthers Taylor Heinicke, Terry Godwin

The Detroit Lions tried out several players today, including two former Carolina Panthers.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke was one of the 37 players who got cut over the weekend when Carolina trimmed its roster down for the regular season.

Heinicke served as Cam Newton’s top backup in 2018, but an arm injury late in the year put him behind schedule on offseason reps and he was never able to break through in the race between Kyle Allen and rookie Will Grier, despite playing better than both during preseason.

The Lions are looking for for more depth behind starter Matt Stafford. At the moment, Josh Johnson and the rookie David Blough are their best options, so Heinicke may have a legitimate chance at their QB2 spot if he signs.

Detroit also worked out the Panthers’ seventh-round draft pick this year, wide receiver/return specialist Terry Godwin. Godwin was easily the most surprising cut of 2019 after impressing as a punter returner early in the preseason.

If either signs, we will post an update.
