Lions trade up, select safety Will Harris at pick #81

The Detroit Lions traded up from pick No. 88 — giving up pick No. 204 in the sixth round — and selected safety Will Harris of Boston College with pick No. 81 in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Lions defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni is likely familiar with Harris from his days at Boston College and it’s safe to assume he weighed in on this selection.

Harris is capable of covering running backs and tight ends but he makes his mark as a hitter. He will compete with Tavon Wilson for the Lions slot safety role and could eventually work his way into a third-safety role. Harris will also likely be a heavy factor on special teams as his skills translate perfectly to a role as a gunner or trail defender.

After selecting tight end T.J. Hockenson with the 8th overall pick on Thursday, Jahlani Tavai at pick No. 43 and now Harris with this selection, the Lions should be done for the night. After dealing away a late sixth-round pick, the Lions still have the following picks remaining tomorrow:

Round 4 Pick 9 111 Overall
Round 5 Pick 8 146 Overall
Round 6 Pick 11 184 Overall
Round 7 Pick 10 224 Overall
Round 7 Pick 20 229 Overall
