Lions tour 2021: Squad reunite ahead of first big test as Alun Wyn Jones assessed

The British and Irish Lions will reunite as a full touring party in Cape Town today – and hope to have another major arrival, in the form of Alun Wyn Jones, imminently.

Jones trained with Wales, who face Argentina this weekend, and will be assessed today, with a view to travelling to South Africa.

This represents a remarkable turnaround for the Lions captain, who was ruled out of the tour with a dislocated shoulder sustained against Japan on June 26.

The Lions will also welcome four members of their management, including Assistant Coach Gregor Townsend, and one player, Stuart Hogg, in Cape Town today. The five were forced into self-isolation when one of the staff members tested positive for Covid-19 in Johannesburg last week, meaning they could not leave for Cape Town with the rest of the group.

Hogg, who captained the Lions against the Sigma Lions earlier in the tour, will hope to be selected to face the Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday, the final match before the First Test on July 24.

Robbie Henshaw and Owen Farrell, who have been nursing injuries, and the recently-arrived Marcus Smith will also hope to be involved in that game.
