Lions surge home over fading Suns in AFL

Brisbane have shaken off a sluggish first half in remarkable fashion to notch an important 49-point AFL win over the Gold Coast at the Gabba.

The Lions trailed 60-33 at halftime and were staring down the barrel of three straight losses before reeling off a run of 11 unanswered goals in the second half.

Lincoln McCarthy booted four majors in the 17.18 (120) to 10.11 (71) victory on Saturday afternoon that keeps Brisbane in the hunt for a top-four berth.

Charlie Cameron and Joe Daniher kicked three goals each, with Daniher producing a particularly spectacular effort late in the third quarter when he leapt to boot the ball in mid-air.

The Lions hit the lead for the first time in the final two minutes of the third term when McCarthy nailed a set shot from 55 metres out.

It was a horror fade out from the Suns, who had all the running in the opening two quarters against a Lions outfit that was wasteful in front of goal.

Cameron, Hugh McCluggage, Oscar McInerney and Jarryd Lyons all played a big part in the comeback - the Lions' sixth win in a row over their southeast Queensland rivals.

It was a relieving win for Brisbane whose form was shaky on the back of losses to Richmond and St Kilda.

Gold Coast copped a blow when Oleg Markov was medically subbed out halfway through the first quarter with a left hamstring problem.

Teammate Sam Flanders had his jaw and cheekbone assessed in the first quarter after heavy contact but played out the game.

Ben King kicked three for the Suns, while Brayden Fiorini topped the possession count for the game with 41.

The Suns kicked the first three goals of the contest and produced a run of four straight in the second term before the wheels fell off.

Young gun Jeremy Sharp was again impressive for the Gold Coast, with 31 disposals and his second career goal.
