Lions sign veteran QB Tom Savage

The Detroit Lions have announced that they have signed veteran quarterback Tom Savage to an undisclosed contract.

“Savage joins the Lions after spending the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers,” the Lions said in a press release. “He began his career with the Houston Texans from 2014-17, where he appeared in 13 games (nine starts) during that span.”

During his time with the Texans, the former fourth-round pick was directly coached by current Lions quarterback coach Sean Ryan. In that 2017 season, Savage started seven games (playing in eight) throwing for 1,412-yards but a disappointing 56.1-percent completion percentage, five touchdowns and six interceptions.

Savage gives the Lions a veteran presence at the reserve quarterback position and someone who can push Conner Cook for a spot on the depth chart. It’s doubtful the Lions are done adding to the position group and could address quarterback on Day 3 of the NFL draft or take a player or two from the undrafted pool.
