Lions sign EDGE Eric Lee to practice squad, release RB Nick Brossette

The Detroit Lions announced that they have signed EDGE rusher Eric Lee to the practice squad and released running back Nick Brossette in a corresponding move.

“Lee returns to the Lions after posting six tackles in nine games for the team in 2018,” the Lions said in a press release. “He entered the NFL in 2016 with the Houston Texans as an undrafted rookie free agent out of South Florida and has also spent time on the Buffalo Bills’ and New England Patriots’ active rosters. In 15 career games (five starts), Lee has totaled 25 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception.”

Lee played at down defensive end for the Lions in 2018 but shifted to a more natural JACK linebacker position during the 2019 offseason. Lee was one of the final cuts two weeks ago when the Lions established their 53-man roster and was a player many local beat writers — myself included — had in their roster projections.

Brossette lasted only 24 hours on the Lions practice squad, basically getting an extended try out with the team. Running back David Williams — who Brossette replaced — went through a similar situation the day prior.

This is a different situation for Lee, as the team knows his capabilities, and are likely making this move with more longterm goals in mind.
