Lions sign DT Ray Smith to practice squad, release DE Jonathan Wynn

The Detroit Lions announced that they have signed defensive tackle Ray Smith to practice squad and released defensive end Jonathan Wynn in a corresponding move.

“Smith returns to the Lions after spending the preseason with the team,” the Lions said in a press release. “He was originally signed by Detroit as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Boston College following the completion of the 2019 NFL Draft.”

After an entire offseason learning the Lions defensive system, Smith should be able to step right back into the rotation and fill a role during practices while fellow defensive tackles Mike Daniels (foot) and Da’Shawn Hand (elbow) recover from injuries.

Smith is a terrific athlete but injuries and opportunity limited his chances during training camp. If he shows well in this current stint with the team, he will have a chance to solidify a spot on a team that relies on their defensive tackle to do multiple things.
