Lions sign 2 WRs, release 2 TEs following rookie minicamp

The Detroit Lions sign wide receivers Tom Kennedy and Jordan Smallwood following rookie minicamp and released tight ends Donald Parham and Nate Becker in corresponding moves.

“Kennedy comes to Detroit as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Bryant University (R.I.),” the Lions said in a press release, “where he played football and lacrosse for the Bulldogs from 2014-18. Smallwood comes to the Lions after a most recent stint with the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad in 2018. He originally entered the NFL in 2018 with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Oklahoma.”

Kennedy posted an 8.51 RAS, including a 6.66-second 3-cone drill on his way to being a Full QIB qualifier. At 5-10, 193-pounds and he will likely find himself competing for a slot role in the Lions scheme, though Bryant used him in a variety of ways, registering 90 receptions for 1,298 yards and 10 touchdowns over 18 games (two seasons).

What makes Kennedy even more unique is that last April, he was drafted in the third round of the 2018 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft by the Boston Cannon and played professionally in the summer of 2018.

With a deep pool of players at tight end, it’s no surprise to see the Lions move on from some of them now rather than later. Both Parham and Becker had veterans (Logan Thomas and Jerome Cunning respectively) ahead of them on the depth chart who themselves are fringe roster players and something had to give.
