Lions select Virginia Tech TE James Mitchell in the 5th round

It took a little while for the Detroit Lions to make their first selection on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft. After the fourth round passed, Detroit selected Virginia Tech TE James Mitchell with the No. 177 overall pick in the fifth round.

Mitchell caught 26 passes for over 400 yards and scored four TDs for the Hokies in 2020. The 6-4, 249-pound Virginia native missed most of the 2021 season with a knee injury.

The Lions go on the clock quickly with pick No. 181.
