Lions rework Sam Martin’s contract, setting up a prove it 2019 season

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the Detroit Lions have reworked punter Sam Martin’s contract, reducing his base salary in 2019 and making 2020 now voidable, setting up a “prove it” season.

The details on this contract weren’t immediately available, but based on Yates report, indications are a reduction in salary, with more guaranteed this season. It’s also not clear who has the option to void the contract in 2020, but typically it’s the team in these situations.

For Martin, he (most likely) takes less money in 2019 but with the increase in guarantees giving him some roster stability this season.

For the Lions, they save cap space in 2019 and now (most likely) have the option to move on from him in 2020 if he has another down season.

We will provide updates as they become available.
