Lions reveal how proud Dan Biggar's mum would be about how he is coping with her death while in training camp

Lions defence coach Steve Tandy has praised Dan Biggar for how he has reacted after the death of his mother.

The Wales fly-half paid tribute to his "special mum" in a touching newspaper column on the weekend, after Elizabeth Biggar passed away after an illness.

And Tandy, who coached Biggar during his time at the Ospreys, believes his family would be proud of how the Northampton Saints star has dealt with the loss.

"It's really tough for Dan," said Tandy.

"It's awful to see anybody losing their mother but the way he has handled himself is absolute class.

"He is one of the best people who I have worked with who can compartmentalise and get on with his work.

"How he is conducting himself, his mum and his family would be very proud of how he is doing."

In a touching tribute to her in his column on MailOnline, the 31-year-old spoke of how his mother had encouraged him to go to South Africa with the Lions this summer regardless of what happened to her.

“Mum watched the Lions squad announcement from the hospital and she was so pleased when my name was read out,” he wrote.

“At the time, when we didn't know what would happen with her health, she told me to go to South Africa whatever the circumstances.

“That summed her up: always putting other people first.

“I usually keep my job separate from any emotional things back home, but I hope that I can use this tour to do her proud.”

Along with Biggar, there are a number of Ospreys stars past and present involved in the Lions squad this summer - such as captain Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric - making the task of settling in all the easier for first-time Lions coach Tandy.

"It helps me more than them probably," he added.

"They're quality players and it helps me settle."
