Lions release reserve linebacker/special teamer Trevor Bates

The Detroit Lions have announced that they have released reserve linebacker/special teamer Trevor Bates.

Bates was recently arrested after a January incident in New York where he allegedly skipped out on cab fare and then assaulted a police officer during processing. The team immediately issued an investigation into the matter.

Bates was then hospitalized and underwent “testing and a mental health evaluation”, according to a statement from his agent, Jeff Jankovic of Vantage Management Group.

From a roster standpoint, Bates was a fringe player who stood out for his contributions on special teams but rarely saw the field as a MIKE linebacker. From a talent standpoint, he was likely to challenge for a role on defense in camp but was not assured a roster spot.

We at Lions Wire wish the best for Bates and hope he receives the proper care required to find a path of success in the future.
