Lions re-sign RB Zach Zenner to a 1-year deal

The Detroit Lions have announced they are re-signing running back Zach Zenner to a one-year deal. Zenner, a massive fan-favorite, will be returning to the Lions for a fifth season.

Zenner broke his back in the final 2018 pre-season game and was released with an injury settlement. After eight weeks to recover, the Lions re-signed him and was immediately a special teams standout. It took him a month before he saw any significant touches on offense, but after injuries within the running back group, Zenner was elevated into a starting role in Week 17.

Zenner’s 2018 encapsulates his career in the NFL, as a player willing to grind it out on special teams, is willing to work and be patient on offense, but when his number is called, he will be ready and willing to produce.

With Darrell Bevell calling offensive plays in 2019, Zenner appears to be a better fit in the offensive scheme than he has been in the past. While he is not guaranteed a role in the rotation or even a spot on the roster, his character and work ethic is undeniable.

Will he earn a coveted role as the Lions second option at running back backing up Kerryon Johnson? Or will he settle in as the fourth back in the rotation? Time will tell on these questions, and the Lions aren’t done adding competition to the position, but one thing is clear, Zenner has earned this contract and this opportunity.
