Lions promote slot WR Tom Kennedy to active roster

At his Friday morning press conference, Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia announced that the team has promoted slot receiver Tom Kennedy to the active roster, filling the spot vacated by the release of Travis Fulgham.

With starting slot receiver Danny Amendola (chest) banged up, Kennedy will act as roster insurance if Amendola is unable to play on Sunday. Amendola has not practiced this week, but Patricia said he will give it a go today and see if he feels comfortable, then they will reassess from there.

With the promotion of Kennedy, the Lions had an open spot on the practice squad and have signed defensive tackle Frank Herron. Herron was originally signed by the New England Patriots after going undrafted out of LSU in the 2018 draft. He spent the year between the Seattle Seahawks and Patriots practice squads, then signed with the Tennessee Titans last offseason before being a cut day casualty.

Herron will get at least a tryout today during practice, but if Fulgham clears waivers, Herron’s spot may be vulnerable if the Lions bring back Fulgham to the practice squad — which has been their strategy in the past with similar type transactions.
