Lions' Matthew Stafford doesn't expect to play with taped fingers going forward

Matthew Stafford said his swollen right hand has progressed to the point that he does not believe he'll need to wear a supporting apparatus on his digits for the rest of the season.

"I don't know yet," Stafford said Tuesday. "I wouldn't think so, but I don't know. Possibly."

Stafford played with athletic tape covering his right ring and pinky fingers in last week's 24-21 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He completed 36 of 44 passes for 381 yards and one touchdown, but also threw two interceptions.

Last year, Stafford played the final four games of the season with a splint on the tip of his middle finger after he dislocated the digit in a Week 14 game against the Chicago Bears.

He threw five interceptions in 19 quarters playing through the injury.

In 2011, when he broke his right index finger, Stafford threw nine interceptions in three games with a glove on his hand.

On Tuesday, Stafford still wore tape on both fingers, but he said his hand is "getting better" and he practiced in full 10 days after Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs inadvertently stepped on his hand.

"Spending a lot of time in the training room still just trying to get it feeling as good as I can," he said.

The Lions practiced Tuesday with three starting offensive linemen and cornerback Nevin Lawson (illness).

Travis Swanson is out with a concussion, Rick Wagner missed last week's game with an ankle injury, and T.J. Lang continues to deal with a foot injury.
