Lions match to be shown live on terrestrial TV for first time in 28 years

The Lions' warm-up match against Japan next month will be shown on Channel Four, it has been announced.

It will be the first time a Lions match has been screened on terrestrial TV in 28 years.

Channel Four has also revealed it will show highlights of all three Test matches against South Africa, as well as highlights of all tour matches on All4. The Lions matches in South Africa will be shown exclusively live on Sky Sports.

The Japan match will be held on June 26 at Murrayfield, just a week before the South Africa tour begins on July 3 with a match against the Stormers.

The last time a Lions game was broadcast on terrestrial TV was the 1993 tour of New Zealand.

British & Irish Lions Managing Director Ben Calveley said: “We are delighted that Channel 4 are our broadcast partners for our first match on home soil since 2005.

“I am looking forward to the excellent coverage and analysis that Channel 4 will no doubt provide and going on the recent squad announcement I’m sure the interest and numbers tuning in will be considerable for this clash.”

Channel 4’s Head of Sport Pete Andrews said: “This is set to be a mouth-watering contest with Alun Wyn Jones leading the Lions against the reigning World Champions.

“It’s fantastic news for rugby fans who will relish the opportunity of seeing the British & Irish Lions in action on free-to-air television.”

The Lions matches will be presented by Lee McKenzie, who hosted the Lions squad announcement last week.

Channel Four will also show the the Heineken Champions Cup Final between La Rochelle and Toulouse on 22 May and Ireland’s Autumn Internationals against the All Blacks, Argentina and another country, yet to be confirmed.
