Kasey Redfern suffered three torn ligaments in his knee in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals, and the Detroit Lions are auditioning replacement punters Monday.
Redfern, who went undrafted out of Wofford in 2014, won the Lions' punting job with a strong preseason and made his NFL debut Sunday.
He kicked a 50-yard punt on his first punt of the game and sent the opening kickoff into the end zone, but he was hurt late in the first quarter when he tried scrambling for a first down after dropping a punt in his own end zone.
Redfern was carted to the locker room after the play, and was diagnosed Monday with a torn ACL and MCL, a partial tear of the patellar tendon and a bone bruise.
Kicker Matt Prater handled punting duties the rest of the game, and backup quarterback Jake Rudock took over for Redfern as holder.
The Lions have at least four punters in for a workout Monday afternoon: Former Miami Dolphins punter Matt Darr, who averaged 44.3 yards per punt last season; ex-Arizona Cardinals punter Drew Butler; Jeff Locke, who was taken 10 picks ahead of Sam Martin in the 2013 NFL draft; and Richie Leone, who last kicked in the CFL.
Martin, who set a franchise record for net punting last season, is on the non-football injury list and out for at least the next five games after suffering a summer foot injury.
Lions coach Jim Caldwell, at his news conference Monday, once again declined to say how Martin was injured this summer and walked off the podium when asked if he was disappointed in his punter for getting hurt.
