Rod Wood says he’s focused on fixing Lions’ relationship with Calvin Johnson

Calvin Johnson left the Detroit Lions a lot earlier than anyone wanted. The perennial All-Pro wide receiver walked away in 2016 after nine seasons in Detroit.

The Lions subsequently drew Johnson’s ire by asking for millions in signing bonus money back for breaching the contract. He’s largely stayed away from the Lions and has avoided some partial overtures to try to repair the damage, though he did attend a game as the team’s special guest in 2018.

The Lions have made it a focus to continue to reach out to Johnson and get him back into the den on good terms.

“I had it on my agenda today to talk internally about some things to reapproach him about getting back involved,” team president Rod Wood said during the annual Taste of the Lions benefit at Ford Field on Wednesday.

“We can be there celebrating with him, and we can have ways to have him here and celebrate as well,” Wood added.

Johnson sits atop just about every receiving category in Lions history. It would be nice if the two sides could work out their differences.
