In a stunning news drop on Sunday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network announced the Detroit Lions are expected to make a push for Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider.
The Lions are a franchise in complete, and seemingly perpetual, disarray. They are once again looking to enter yet another rebuild after firing head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn in late November.
It makes perfect sense as to why the Lions would want to pursue a proven executive such as Schneider, as his record speaks for himself. In his 11 years as Seattle’s general manager, Schneider has helped accumulate a lofty record of 111-63-1 and managed to draft some of the most iconic players in Seahawks history – such as Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, K.J. Wright, and Earl Thomas.
All but Thomas were found in the third round or later.
The players Schneider drafted early in his tenure with Seattle laid the foundation for the franchises’ first-ever championship in Super Bowl XLVIII, and a trip to Super Bowl XLIX the following year. Something the Detroit Lions have never accomplished in their 90-year history.
Of course, luring Schneider away from the Emerald City to the Motor City won’t be a cakewalk for the Lions. The organization would probably have to compensate the Seahawks heavily for even the opportunity to negotiate a potential arrangement, plus there is even the matter of if Schneider would even want to leave the Seahawks.
Speaking about it with Steve Raible of KIRO Radio on Sunday’s pregame show, Schneider spoke highly of the city of Seattle and the Seahawks organization.
“Traci and I – my wife and I – love it here, obviously,” Schneider declared. “Great team, great ownership, Coach Carroll, the city, the 12s, everything.”
Schneider ended his statement with Raible by saying “we’re good” in regards to wanting to be in Seattle.
As of now, Schneider and the Seahawks are likely focused on a Super Bowl run, needing to get past the 49ers first. As of this post, Seattle and San Francisco are all tied up 6-6 in the third quarter.
