Lions coaches decide Test team at 90-minute meeting as players to be told imminently amid 'bitter disappointment' warning

The Lions has settled on their matchday squad for this Saturday's Test opener against South Africa, with the players set to be told imminently.

Forwards coach Steve Tandy revealed a long selection meeting on Sunday night ensured most of the side has been inked in, with just a couple of things to be rubberstamped later today.

"We had an initial selection process last night, which was a long one in fairness, just covering all bases," said Tandy on Monday.

"A lot of players have put their hands up and it is a great place for us as coaches to be. There will be bitter disappointment, but I believe that within this squad there is such a tight connection that everyone will be geared-up to winning that first Test whether you are in the 23 or not.

"It was a good hour and a half, maybe a bit longer. It was a good initial meeting and we were becoming clearer and clearer as we went along. We will confirm it up and Gats will announce it at an appropriate time."

In terms of how the Test selection process worked, Lions coach Warren Gatland and his coaching staff would have watched the match back following Saturday's victory over the Stormers in Cape Town before speaking to the medics to check everyone is fit.

After that, a lengthy selection meeting between Gatland and his coaching ticket took place on Sunday night in which the majority of the Test side was nailed down.

Tandy admitted it was the hardest selection he's come across.

"It was one of the toughest things that I have been involved in as so many people have put their hands up in terms of putting their best foot forward," he added.

"I think it is just confirming.

"It was really robust and at the end of the day the time flew by around selection. There are probably one or two things to firm up, but the majority is probably done."

In terms of when the players will be informed of the side, that's still up in the air a little with the final stamp of approval set to be put on the Test side.

"We will probably confirm things today or tomorrow and then it will be up to Gats to feel when it is appropriate," added Tandy.

However, it seems likely that the players will find out either by the end of today or early tomorrow in a team meeting, where Gatland will name the 23-man matchday squad to the players and talk through a few extra messages for his side.

Speaking about when the players are likely to find out, prop Tadhg Furlong said: "I presume it'll be in a team meeting.

"When? I'm not too sure. We'll train this afternoon. If its before then, we don't know.

"We'll probably find out before tomorrow I'd guess."
