Lions coach Dan Campbell: ‘You can’t worry about the past’ with the team

It’s been a long time since the Detroit Lions last won a football game. The Lions have a 12-game losing streak dating back to last season, including 0-8 this year. But Lions coach Dan Campbell doesn’t worry about the legacy of losing he inherited or is lording over in his first season in Detroit.

Campbell was asked about if he pays attention to the critical talk and consternation about his team and its poor record. The question was framed in the context of using it as bulletin board material to help motivate the team. Coach Campbell made it clear it’s not something he worries about personally or believes his players should either.

“Oh yeah, I don’t (listen to it),” Campbell answered quickly. “There again, I don’t – man, it’s all about us in here and we’ve got to stay true to who we are and we can’t deviate from the standards that we’ve set from day one. It’s easy to do that. It’s easy to do that if you do listen to all of the outside noise and you start getting in panic mode, but we’re trying to build something here and I do like the guys we have in this building right now.

As long as they just focus on each day coming out here and just getting better, this is the most important day, right now, because this is the day we’re in and it’s to get ready for Pittsburgh. And that’s all you can worry about. That’s all you can focus on. You can’t worry about the past. You can’t worry about next week. It’s got to be right now.”
