Lions claim former Packers RB Tra Carson off waivers

The Green Bay Packers won’t be returning running back Tra Carson on the practice squad, at least not right away.

Released Wednesday to make room for receiver Ryan Grant, Carson was claimed off of waivers by the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

The Packers originally promoted Carson from the practice squad on Oct. 5. He played in two games, carrying six times for 14 yards and catching four passes for 18 yards.

It’s likely the Packers wanted to bring him back on the practice squad as insurance behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. He spent the first four weeks of the season on the practice squad and was promoted to be the backup running back – above rookie Dexter Williams – when Jamaal Williams went down with a head injury.

Then again, the Packers must’ve known there was a chance Carson would be claimed when they signed running back Damarea Crockett to the practice squad on Wednesday.

As it stands now, Dexter Williams – who hasn’t been active all season – is the team’s clear No. 3 running back.

To make room for Carson, the Lions released running back Paul Perkins.
