Lions broadcaster, longtime Pistons voice Fred McLeod passes away

Longtime Detroit broadcaster Fred McLeod has unexpectedly passed away at age 67 on Monday.

McLeod is best-known by Detroiters for his work as the play-by-play man for the Pistons from 1984-2006, but he also returned to the local scene this summer as the play-by-play commentator for the Lions preseason. The veteran broadcaster also spent some time working with the Tigers earlier in his career.

He has worked as the primary voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers since leaving the Pistons beat, including an unforgettable call when the Cavs captured their first-ever NBA title in 2016.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the McLeod family. Both Erik Schlitt and myself here at Lions Wire met Fred for the first time this summer.
