Lions awarded RB Tra Carson via waivers, waive RB Paul Perkins

The Detroit Lions have been awarded running back Tra Carson (formerly of the Green Bay Packers) via waivers and waived running back Paul Perkins, in a corresponding move.

Undrafted out of Texas A&M, Carson joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad but was promoted late in the season. He spent 2017 on the Bengals injured reserve.

In 2018 he was waived/injured because of a hamstring injury and joined the Packers practice squad. Later in the season, he was promoted to the active roster before once again landing on injured reserve with a rib injury.

He started this season on the Packer practice squad and was promoted October 5th ahead of their game with the Dallas Cowboys. He ran the ball six times for 14 yards in that game.

With Packers running back Jamaal Williams returning to full health, the Packers released Carson and were hoping to sneak him back to their practice squad, but the Lions claimed him instead.

At 5-11, 227-pounds, Carson is a tough downhill runner who can contribute in the passing game as a blocker and receiver, as well as in all five-phases of special teams. Injuries are an issue to watch out for, but if active, Carson can be a starter on special teams if given the opportunity.
