Lions announce 7 team-voted captains for the 2019 season

At coach Matt Patricia’s morning press conference, he announced that the team voted captains seven captains for the 2019 season: Jarrad Davis, Devon Kennard, Quandre Diggs, Don Muhlbach, Matthew Stafford, Danny Amendola and Taylor Decker.

Under Jim Caldwell, the Lions rotated captains on a game by game basis, but once Patricia took over in 2018, he has announced year-long captains that were voted on by the team. Stafford, Davis, Kennard and Muhlbach were also captains last season.

When Glover Quin retired — also a captain in 2018 — he mentioned Diggs as the player he expected to take over a leadership role on defense, so his inclusion should come as no surprise here.

Keeping with replacing a veteran leader theme, Decker will apparently step into the captain’s role that was vacated by retired T.J. Lang.

The only real surprise among this group is Amendola being voted a captain over Marvin Jones, who was a captain in 2018. Amendola has always been praised for his leadership on each team he has played for and his relationship with Patricia likely helps his confidence, but remember, these captains were chosen by the players, not the coaches.

Obviously, Amendola has made a significant impression in the locker room and it’s fair to assume those expectations will carry over onto the field.
