Lions add RB David Williams to practice squad, released QB Chad Kanoff

The Detroit Lions have announced that they have added running back David Williams to practice squad and released quarterback Chad Kanoff in a corresponding move.

“Williams joins the Lions after spending the 2019 preseason with the Denver Broncos,” the Lions said in a press release. “He originally entered the League as the Broncos’ seventh-round pick (226th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. In 2018, he was a member of Denver’s practice squad before being claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His career totals included eight carries for 36 yards (4.5 avg.).”

At 6-0, 224 pounds, Williams is a North-South power runner who doesn’t waste a lot of movement. He has active hands, using stiff arms frequently in traffic to create space, but he can also use them in the passing game as a receiver. He is very much a project at the position, but has very little wear and tear as a runner and could be someone the Lions look to develop.

After Mark Thompson returned to Baltimore yesterday, signing on to the Ravens practice squad, Williams looks to fill a replacement role in the Lions locker room.
