Lions 2021 squad announcement: Eight Scotland players named for South Africa tour

Eight Scotland players have been named in the British and Irish Lions Squad to tour South Africa this summer.

Five of the players are backs with just two of them part of the forwards selected for the tour, which begins on July 26 and runs until August 3.

Edinburgh trio Duhan Van Der Merwe, Rory Sutherland and Hamish Watson have all been included, as have Glasgow Warriors pair Ali Price and Zander Fagerson.

Stuart Hogg, Chris Harris and Finn Russell have also been selected and it's the biggest amount of Scotland players in a squad selected by Warren Gatland.

It's the Wales head coach's third term in charge of the Lions and the impressive showings of Scotland during the Six Nations meant he had to include them.

It's a huge boost for both Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors to get so many players involved, with Hogg and Russell likely to play major parts in the tour.

Hogg is currently with Exeter Chiefs and expected to start at full back in the tournament, while Russell will compete with England's Owen Farrell for the 10 jersey.

The Lions will begin their tour with a friendly against Japan at Murrayfield in June, before the first of their three tests against the Springboks on July 24.
