The Detroit Lions have revealed the jersey numbers for the players they signed recently during the 200 free agency period.
The rookies already received their numbers, some of which are bound to change before the regular season begins.
Quick notes:
Chase Daniel, who wore the number 4 for the Chicago Bears, will once again don the number in Detroit. The number, famously worn by longtime kicker Jason Hanson, has not been used in Detroit during the regular season since his retirement.
One number that the Lions don’t seem ready to put back into circulation is 81, famously worn by Detroit’s all-time great Calvin Johnson. Geronimo Allison, who has worn that number throughout the entirety of his pro career, will instead wear 18.
With a shortage of available numbers suitable for the position, cornerback Desmond Trufant will wear number 23, which was recently worn by three-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro Darius Slay.
Linebacker Christian Sam, who wore number 59 last season, gave the number to newly-signed Reggie Ragland. Ragland has donned that number throughout his entire professional career. Sam now wears the number 54.
Jamie Collins will continue wearing 58, which he previously held in New England.
Offensive lineman Russell Bodine will wear 60, his number from his days with the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Nose tackle Danny Shelton has worn the number 71 since his high school days and will continue to wear it in Detroit.
Sporting number 72 for the Lions is Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who also wore the number for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nicholas Williams will also wear a number he wore for a previous team. He held 97 for the Bears over the last two seasons.
