Lionel Richie gives brutal takedown of American Idol hopeful - 'I don't like you'

There was no sugar coating appraisal of an American Idol contestant's chances by Lionel Richie in the season premiere of the singing competition.

The 70-year-old judge was in no mood to take prisoners as he spoke his mind at the beginning of the 18th season, telling Nick Merico straight about his chances, in a brutal takedown.

While the likes of Louis Walsh may look for the best of any audition on The X Factor, singing legend Richie was not so forgiving, telling the hopeful: "I don't like you."

While fellow judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan saw some potential in Nick's performance, Lionel shut it down much to the surprise of those judging with him.

Nick had arrived for the audition full of confidence, as he looked to prove that his bubbly personality coupled with the ability to pop some dance moves would see him good stead.

After an initially positive reaction to his audition, Katy Perry took down the mood a notch or two by telling Nick that he would tone down his ego.

Then Lionel had his say and it wasn't pretty as he gave Nick both barrels.

The legendary singer started: “We have a problem. Well, a big problem actually because I don’t like you.”

A shocked Katy Perry gasped "Lionel Richie" as Luke Bryan sighed.

Lionel continued: "I’ve got to be honest with you, I don’t like you. And for some weird reason, it’s not sitting well with me.

"I don’t like your voice. I’m being very honest. I don’t like your attitude. And I don’t really think you’re going to make it in Hollywood.”

It is fair to say that Nick has been told and any future subscription to the Lionel Richie fan club may be on a back burner.

Before the new series started, Lionel was in a far more positive mood, revealing: "The talent is showing up in buckets

“They’re bringing more attitude to the table. In certain cases we have to turn the attitude down. But for the most part it’s amazing what’s happened this year.”
