Lionel Messi voted for Virgil van Dijk's Liverpool teammate in Best FIFA awards

Lionel Messi pipped Virgil van Dijk to the Best Men's Player at the FIFA Best awards in Milan on Monday night, to the surprise of many.

The Barcelona superstar is no stranger to individual awards, but the bookies saw Van Dijk as the overwhelming favourite to win the gong after he helped Liverpool win the Champions League in June, memorably beating Messi's Barca along the way.

But it was to be Messi's night for the main award in Milan, although Van Dijk did earn a spot in the Men's World XI of the Year along with Messi and his Liverpool teammate Alisson Becker.

The best player is voted for by international coaches and captains, as well as members of the media.

Messi and Van Dijk are the captains of Argentina and the Netherlands respectively, and so both had their say when it came to the winner.

Van Dijk opted for Messi in first place, helping him to a victory in a close-run contest against himself, while he had his Liverpool teammates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in second and third.

Messi, meanwhile, opted to vote for Mane in first place, his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in second and his new Barcelona teammate Frenkie De Jong in third.

England captain Harry Kane went for a 1, 2, 3 of Messi, Van Dijk and Ronaldo, with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate going Messi first, Ronaldo second and Van Dijk third.

Meanwhile, Scotland skipper and Liverpool defender Andy Robertson went with two of his Reds teammates in his top three of Van Dijk, De Jong and Mane.

Wales captain Ashley Williams voted for Van Dijk, Eden Hazard and De Jong as his 1, 2, 3.
