Lionel Messi urged to join Manchester United or Man City by Wayne Rooney who insists seventh Ballon d'Or awaits

Wayne Rooney has told Lionel Messi to come to the Premier League and continue his world domination by winning a seventh Ballon d’Or.

Messi this week informed Barcelona he wants to leave the club and he is hoping to do so for free due to a clause in his contract.

That has put clubs around Europe on red alert, with Manchester City at the front of the queue to sign the 33-year-old.

And Rooney has now told Messi to come to England and sign for either his old club Manchester United or their rivals City.

“I think he is one of the only players I’ve ever sat there and watched and been in awe of,” Rooney told talkSPORT.

“He could come to the Premier League and become the player of the year, one million per cent in my opinion.

“I don’t think he can do it for the next two or three years, but certainly for next season if he signs himself with players like Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, with these types of players, he can go win a seventh Ballon d’Or.

“I know he is getting a bit older, but no one has ever seen a player like him. There’s that debate of Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo - and Messi just has everything.

“He is the best player of all time and if he can come to the Premier League, whichever team it is, and I truly believe it is Manchester City or Manchester United who can sign him.”
