Lionel Messi transfer news as Barcelona president in new contract 'confidence' surge to keep suitors at bay

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is "convinced" Lionel Messi will stay at the La Liga giants.

The new figurehead at Barca, who was elected last month on a platform of keeping Messi at the club, has provided a series of interviews to Spanish media ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Club on Saturday night.

And his comments reveal he's feeling confident the Argentinian legend - who made clear his intentions to leave the club last summer before standing down in a transfer wrangle - will stay at Camp Nou.

Messi has been linked with a switch to Paris Saint-Germain where he would link up with past team-mate Neymar.

But Laporta told TV channel LaSexta: "Everything that has to do with Messi's renewal is progressing adequately."

He also made clear to Deportes Cuatro that he is "convinced" Messi "wants to continue at Barcelona."

An internal audit of the club's finances, which in recent months have been reported to be rather grim, is expected soon.

After that, Catalonian outlet Sport claim, Laporta will be able to clearly weigh up whether keeping the No. 10 is feasible.
