Lionel Messi told La Liga is "ready" for him to follow Cristiano Ronaldo and exit

La Liga president Javier Tebas insists the league are prepared for Lionel Messi's exit should he quit Barcelona in the summer.

The Argentine made moves to leave the Nou Camp several months ago before opting to stay for another season.

Some have claimed that his exit would dent the La Liga product.

But Tebas doesn't share those fears having seen Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo leave Spain's top flight in consecutive years.

The outspoken chief also took a swipe at Manchester City, the club most heavily linked with Messi's signature.

His gripe with the English side is nothing new and he has reiterated his view that they do not operate fairly in a financial sense.

"We would prefer Messi to stay in La Liga but Ronaldo and Neymar left and we have not noticed any difference," Tebas said. "We are ready."

"It seems the only club in the Premier League that talks about registering Messi is Manchester City, who compete outside the rules.

"I am not the only one saying this.

"I am not too worried about them. I have criticised what they do so many times. Doing it one more time makes no difference.

"City is neither affected by Covid or pandemics or anything because they are financed differently and it is impossible to fight against that."

One of Messi's major issues with Barcelona was the leadership of previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

He has since resigned, a decision that ignited celebrations among some Catalan supporters.

But Tebas has defended Bartomeu and absolved him of an blame regarding Barcelona's growing debts.

"Barcelona are not considering insolvency proceedings," he added.

"Their debt might be slightly larger but they were perfectly solvent pre-Covid. But Covid has come along and taken away a lot of revenue. They are not so capable of repaying the debt, so their salary volume has to go down.

"That is the essential factor for most clubs. It is not because they were mismanaged earlier."
