Lionel Messi to receive 'astronomical offer' elsewhere if he resists new contract

Inter Milan are hopeful of persuading Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona next year by tabling an 'astronomical offer' to the Argentine forward.

Messi, 33, is out of contract next year and is discontented with life at the Nou Camp following a series of behind-the-scenes rows and the club's disappointing season.

Now Inter are reportedly looking to capitalise if they are able to sit down for a discussion with the Barcelona skipper in the next 12 months.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report (via Marca ) that Inter are willing to offer Messi a deal worth €260million (£235m) over four years.

The deal would push Messi's net earnings beyond that of rival Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Inter have already seemingly started their charm offensive, after Messi's image was projected onto Milan's Duomo cathedral on the day of their clash with Napoli.

The publicity stunt was reportedly done by Inter's owners, though those at the club played down such suggestions, and remain sceptical that a deal for Messi can be reached.

Giuseppe Marotta, Inter's CEO, told Sky Sport Italia: "Messi on the cathedral? It wasn't my idea. It reminds me of football from the past with such situations. We are talking about an icon, a great player, a desire that everyone has.

He added it would be "extraordinary to see such a champion at Inter. "It's fantasy football, a utopian situation."

Manager Antonio Conte offered a similar verdict on the rumours, saying it was "improbable" the six-time Ballon d'Or winner would end up at the San Siro.

"It'd be easier to move the Duomo than to bring Messi to Inter!" Conte added.

Barcelona naturally have no plans to let Messi leave the club, and remain confident he will pen an extension.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu told Mundo Deportivo : "Messi has said many times that he wants to retire here and I have no doubt that he will re-sign."
