Lionel Messi tells Barcelona to avoid Liverpool 'mistakes' in Champions League

Lionel Messi has urged his Barcelona teammates to not forget the pain of their loss in the Champions League semi-final last season.

The Argentinean scored twice in the first leg at the Nou Camp as the Catalan side raced into a 3-0 first-leg advantage.

But they were stunned as Liverpool thrashed them 4-0 in the second leg at Anfield to knock them out and end their chances of a first Champions League title since the 2014-2015 season.

Barcelona have qualified for the last-16 this time around after winning Group F, and speaking ahead of winning his sixth Ballon d'Or Messi said his side must learn from their errors of last season.

"To be honest, the Champions League is always there, but I think we have to start from scratch," Messi said.

"It's a new year, a new competition, and what we have to do is learn from the past, from mistakes, and think about the present and forget from last year and the previous year because it would be a mistake to fall into that again."

Messi broke the record of the most Ballon d'Ors won by picking up his sixth gong, and said he felt honoured by the prize.

He added: "It is special and different; each one has something special and this one is for the moment in which I find myself on a personal and football level. But each one has its own little things.

"I am in the moment of trying to improve myself, of wanting to learn every day, of taking care of myself and of resting, of enjoying the activities I do ... all that makes me very grateful to be able to continue dedicating myself to football."

Messi will be looking to help his side continue to battle Real Madrid for the La Liga title when they take on Real Sociedad on Saturday.
