Messi, 33, notched Barcelona’s third in their La Liga encounter with Real Valladolid.
It moved him past Pele, with Messi having equalled the Brazil legend’s Santos goals total at the weekend.
Paying tribute on social media, Gary Lineker surmised: "To beat Messi’s 644 goal record, someone will have to score an average of 43 goals a season for 15 years....for one club."
