Lionel Messi snubs Virgil van Dijk as Barcelona star chooses alternative Liverpool player as FIFA Best

Virgil van Dijk didn't receive a vote from Lionel Messi as the Liverpool defender lost out in the FIFA Best Men's Player award.

Barcelona superstar Messi finished ahead of Van Dijk to lift the award at a ceremony in Milan on Monday night.

And the Dutch skipper didn't even make Messi's top three in his voting for the award.

Messi chose Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt in third and his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, also at Juventus, in second. Liverpool winger Sadio Mane, who finished fifth in the overall running, was the Argentine's top pick.

Messi and Ronaldo have both been accused of tactical voting in the past, and it does seem peculiar that Van Dijk didn't even make his top three.

And Messi also snubbed Jurgen Klopp in his voting for the FIFA Best Men's Coach award, which was won by the Liverpool boss.

Klopp, who guided Liverpool to an incredible victory over Messi's Barcelona on the way to winning the Champions League against Tottenham in Madrid, gave a stunning acceptance speech after picking up the award.

But Champions League glory wasn't enough for Messi, who picked his old manager Pep Guardiola as his number one vote. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino came second in Messi's picks, ahead of Marcelo Gallardo, who guided River Plate to the Copa Libertadores.
